Julia Baucom grew up in Olney, Maryland, where she discovered a passion for drawing and painting at an early age. She earned her BFA in Painting and Printmaking in 2014 from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. She moved to Los Angeles to pursue her career, continuing to create large scale oil paintings. She has had artwork displayed in Richmond, Washington DC, Los Angeles, and Ventura, CA. She currently lives and works in east LA.
My work is a visual outcome of the study of human experience and spirituality. They are small fragmentations revealing an anticipation and yearning for knowledge and discovery of our universe, and fundamental understanding.
My artwork is a manifestation of an inquisitive process in understanding reality and true absoluteness. It strives to demystify the delusions that derive from both our inherent filters and our social constructs; it encourages a shift of perspective from the familiar to a new world of the strange. In waking up our consciousness and our susceptibility to feeling and connecting, we transform the mundane to immerse in a reality more intimate and honest.
My paintings are psychedelic in nature, a direct result of their philosophical intent. The surrealistic images and artistic decisions involved can range from an enchanting euphoric experience to that of a disturbing nature; they are hyperbolic representations of daily life and the psyche. As I am trying to see the world in different lights and angles, my work radiates an unusual ambience…alluring, visionary, yet offbeat and perplexing.
I want my art to capture a distinct feeling of sudden awareness.
